Why Men Hide Their Feelings

Fear of looking weak is one of the reasons why men hide their feelings.

From childhood movies to your favorite song lyrics, the tough guy image is omnipresent.

Men are expected to be strong, silent protectors, the rocks of their families. While there’s definitely something admirable about strength and responsibility, this stereotype can sometimes create a roadblock.

A survey featured in a MindBodyGreen article showed that out of 4,000 men, 58% feel like they’re expected to be strong. (Gonsalves 2019)

But true strength isn’t supposed to be about shutting down emotions. It’s about facing challenges head-on, and that includes navigating the full range of human feelings.

Why men hide their feelings can stem from these reasons:

6 Common Reasons Why Men Hide Their Feelings

There are a few reasons why men might hold in their emotions instead of letting them out. Here’s a deeper look at some of the most common ones:

1. They are socially conditioned to be tough.

Ever since they’re young, men are often told to be tough and not to cry. Phrases like “boys don’t cry” or “man up” can make it seem like showing feelings is a sign of weakness.

This is rather confusing because everyone feels happy, sad, scared, and angry sometimes. It’s normal and healthy to have a wide range of emotions.

2. They have a fear of being judged.

Imagine being told that showing your emotions makes you weak. That can be pretty scary for men who grew up believing that men should always be tough.

Guys might worry that if they open up about their feelings, they’ll be judged or made fun of. This fear can cause them to hold themselves back from talking to their friends, family, or even a partner about what they really feel inside. Effectively bottling up their emotions.

3.They are unsure how to talk about their emotions.

Sometimes, men just don’t know how to put their feelings into words. They might feel overwhelmed by a wave of emotions or unsure how to express them clearly.

This can be especially frustrating, because they might want to open up but struggle to find the right words. The jumble of emotions can make it even harder to communicate effectively.

4. They are pressured to be the “strong ones.”

In many cultures, there’s an expectation that men should be the strong ones and in control.

This pressure makes it difficult for them to admit when they’re feeling weak or need help. A guy hiding his feelings for you, for example, doesn’t want to show weakness as it might turn you off or let you down.

5. They didn’t have role models growing up.

If a man doesn’t see healthy examples of men expressing their emotions while growing up, he'll most likely end up not knowing how to do it himself.

Maybe his father or male role models never opened up about their feelings, so he never learned the importance of emotional expression, or that it’s okay to be emotionally vulnerable even as a man.

6. They don’t want to look vulnerable.

Opening up about your feelings is quite scary for some men. It can make them feel exposed and vulnerable, like they’re putting their heart on their sleeve.

This fear can be a powerful deterrent, especially for men who haven’t had much practice expressing their emotions. For them, masculinity and vulnerability cannot coexist.

Real Men Are Not Afraid to Show Emotions.

With our new-found knowledge of why men hide their feelings, you should now understand them better.

Men can be stubborn in showing their emotions. They tend to forget that being impassive is not the criteria for being a real man—because real men do cry! They are only humans, after all.

Truth be told, expressing emotions is not a sign of weakness, but rather of strength. It shows that you have a strong mind and that you’re not afraid to show your true self.

I know that it takes courage to open up and be vulnerable. But you don’t have to conform to social conditioning just to be a real man. Break down those old ideas and show them that it’s okay to feel happy, sad, scared, or any emotion for that matter.

Don’t be afraid to show your true nature, it doesn’t make you less of a man when you reveal your “human” side.
